This remarkable mess tin and canteen belonged to Lieutenant Ulysses G. Bickell, a doctor who served from 1918 to 1919 at Hospital #91 in Commercy, France. The mess tin, decorated by Bickell, features a portrait of a nude woman with the title “Paris” beneath it, while the reverse bears his name, dates, and location. The 1918-dated canteen is adorned with an image of a dog and the inscription “American Dogs of War,” with his initials engraved on the reverse. Together, these pieces represent exceptional examples of soldier artwork, both attributed to the same individual.
Photos of Bickell are not included but can be found online.
