A 1918 dated canteen and cup with soldier inscription on cup. Soldier was Ollie S. Smith, Co L 166th Infantry. Clearly carved into the cup is “Ollie Smith / Co. L  166, INF.” and on opposite side is “France / 1917-18-19 / U.S.A.”  Also on bottom of cup are the initials “O S”.  Smith was from Lancaster, OH. He enlisted early in 1917 and was sent overseas shortly thereafter. The unit fought at Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne.  A good example of trench art done by a soldier that was in the middle of the action.
