The Army took extensive measures to protect troops from potential chemical warfare attacks. In late 1942, most tops were updated with “gas flaps” on the chest and cuffs, while trousers were equipped with overlapping flies to prevent blister agents from contacting soldiers’ skin. Garments with these modifications were labeled “Special.” The Specials debuted in early 1943, with production contracts running alongside non-special garments. In January 1943, the first “Special,” the short-lived 45C, was introduced. It was nearly identical to the 45B but featured a gas flap and buttons under the rear collar for an anti-gas hood. By March 1943, the 45D replaced it.

A Special pattern jacket with gas flap. These were only made in 1943 and were termed the 45C by the Quartermaster Dept. Condition is excellent with just minor wear and some scattered light stains from storage over the years. Interestingly, the back has an unknown to me, tactical symbol in blue/green paint lightly applied.  Size is 38R.  Pockets are the non-gusseted type. All buttons are present and in excellent condition.
